Why You Need Not Be Too Scared Of Google's Search Results
Some people thinking of setting up a website are scared off by the online competition they see. Which is understandable -- whenever you do a search on a term in one of the search engines like Google, you are told that Google has found hundreds of thousands, often even millions, of pages that supposedly match your search criteria.
Say you're thinking of setting up a website on floral gift baskets to service the Houston area, for example. You do a search on 'floral gift baskets houston' in Google, and the search engine tells you it's found 143,000 pages that match your criteria.
143,000! Just how do you get found amongst so many? You think... forget it! I can't compete. This ain't gonna work.
But wait a moment. Yes, the competition is tough -- but not that tough.
That's because easily 90%, maybe even 99%, of those search results are junk, spam, duplicate pages, what have you. Want to know what the real competition is?
Here's how: scroll as far to the end of the search results as you can. Don't worry, you won't have to take more than a minute. I've attached 3 screen shots below to show you how to do that (just click on each one to see it).
And what's the surprising result? There're actually only 557 pages that Google ends up showing. The last page says "In order to show you the most relevant results, we have omitted some entries very similar to the 557 already displayed."
(That's an awful lot of 'some'.)
So that's your real competition: 557. Still quite a large number, but not that bad... not impossible to overcome, so long as your website has useful, non-duplicate, non-spam content.
Try this with any search term at all -- you'll find the same thing happens most of the time. |
